Captain America and the Divided States of American Christianity
God is not constrained by our human divisions.

God is not constrained by our human divisions.

As a Black man, Sam Wilson carries the lineage of America’s broken promise, by both heritage and by lived experience.

We don’t do “once upon a time,” and we don’t get to ask for a fairy godmother to save us; in America, we save ourselves.

It is not normal for those with power to lay it down for another’s sake. To those insecure in their power, this feels like surrender. It feels like shame. Humiliation.

Sam is, by every measure, the living embodiment of American excellence and all the ideals for which the shield stands. But he’s not just any man. He’s a Black man.

Perhaps the spectacle of ‘Captain America: Civil War’ can give us pause enough to consider our cultural situation and the precipice over which we stand.

Can we live a life for the sake of Christ and the kingdom of God without carrying any regrets about the consequences down the road?

So what is Captain America’s crime in the eyes of the political pundits? His sin seems to be caring about people.

Though God first reveals Himself in The Bible, He also gives us echoes of His Word and reflections of His image in secular novels and films.

“If one can disarm another of his powers if he misuses them, then that is better than detaining them and letting them keep their powers.”
