The 25 Episode 12: ‘The Jungle Book’, ‘Dark Souls 3’ and ‘You Are What You Love’

You Are What You Love by James K.A. Smith along with Disney’s The Jungle Book, and the video game Dark Souls III, are the nominations for this week’s episode of The 25. Sarah Kelly takes the center chair this week and hosts returning guests Karen Swallow Prior, Luke T. Harrington and Adam Bryant Marshall for this 12th episode of the CaPC 25 for 2016.
The movie, The Jungle Book is nominated for its place in this enormous freight train that is our sequel/reboot film culture. Everybody wants something new, but the box office numbers don’t back that up. The internet goes on a rampage when a reboot or sequel comes out, calling for original ideas and properties. However, the new movies don’t fare well in the box office but the reboots soar to the top of the record charts.
Dark Souls III, is the final entry into the Souls series of games. It is glorified amongst it fans for its difficulty, something that stands in contrast to the hand holding trends of modern game design. Pushing the player to value patience, attention the challenges presented, and persistence Dark Souls III rewards the player with beauty both aesthetically and the sense of awe, wonder and perhaps…Holiness.
You Are What You Love by James K. A. Smith talks about how we are first and foremost “desiring” creatures. A Christian worldview is something we are taught which in turn affects how we think about and process the world. However desire lies beneath the processing. How we structure our daily lives forms our own unique liturgy. This worshipful routine of our hearts reinforce our desires which can be eating, consumerism, and other things both good and evil. Christian knowledge and frameworks are important, but how we love and what we love form the basis of our routines and habits and You Are What You Love makes the concept relatable to everyone.
