Ender’s Game, a science fiction favorite among many readers (including Ben Bartlett and myself), is becoming a film this November 2013.  It just released its first trailer, and, boy does it look exciting. In all hopes, this film will not only be well-produced, but also a thoughtful understanding of war and childhood.  I recommend that Christians keep this film on their radar.

  1. I’m going, for sure. Loved the book, even if the ending was kind of smarmy. (Won’t give it away.) I hope it preserves the “nerdy” details of strategy and tactics that made the book so great.

  3. Card’s best work is still from the 1980s. After that, he’s published a lot, but somehow he’s lost the plot both literally and figuratively.

    The Ender series has something like 13 books, with 3 more forthcoming, but where it is supposed to go? I have no idea. I feel that the first two novels would have been enough.

    I’m reminded of Frank Herbert, who should have at the latest stopped his Dune series with Children of Dune. Or Roger Zelazny. Great writer from mid-60s to early 70s and then… just the same stuff, but weaker, until he died.

    And Card’s other big series of the 80s, Tales of Alvin the Maker, kind of wandered off the track and just… went to hibernation without any conclusion. Last book came out ten years ago and there’s supposedly one more to come at some point in the future, but the last one already treaded water.
