G.I. Joe has been shielded from critics until opening night, which is likely a bad sign for both the film and the future of film criticism.

  1. I don’t know. We’ve been hearing about critic-proof films for at least a decade now. Things like Transformers and G.I. Joe just prove that such a thing truly and honestly exists. (Well, presumably G.I. Joe—as the show has neither the pop cachet nor the Megan Fox that the robot show did.)

I don’t believe this will significantly change the role of film reviewers and it certainly won’t affect critics in any way (if anything, stuff like this gives the latter more to talk about). Reviewers will still be necessary to assist the moviegoing population to make decisions about the 99% of films that aren’t critic-proof. And the role of film critics is not remotely related to box offices so nothing changes for the critic.
