Why does Star Wars still take over the minds of small boys?

  1. What Mike said (except the Hero’s story instead of Jung) plus lasers, ships, lightsabers and it’s amazing so there.

  2. For me, it didn’t have anything to with any archetype save for perhaps the archetypical cool. Banthas, stormtroopers, Vader, Vader’s modded tie fighter, death stars, trash monsters, Hammerhead, the Falcon, light sabers, tauntauns, landspeeders, AT-Ats, and friggin’ Boba Fett. His action figure came out before Empire Strikes Back and we didn’t know who he was or whether that rocket pack was a missile launcher or what (early model prompted yes), but we knew that guy was friggin’ cool. This was before Lucas pooped him into the stomach of a stationary beast, so we didn’t know any better.

As far as the hero’s path, we didn’t care. I didn’t care if Luke won or died or turned into Darth Vader’s father via time warp. Star Wars was never about the story for me—something for which I’m retroactively grateful, seeing what’s become of the franchise.
