I wrote this little article for my church’s newsletter this week concerning Pastor Terry Jones the Qur’an burning controversy that is getting so much media attention.  My concern is not to give this whole debacle more attention than it deserves but to address what Christians should do when “evangelical” crazies misrepresent us.

In the meantime, also check out Denny Burke’s blog which summarizes my thoughts about how Christians can best respond to this Pastor’s proposed plan to burn Qur’ans.

I will simply say two things:  First, it is telling that people in Kabul are burning effigies of Pastor Jones and folks in Indonesia are rioting and yet more media attention is being given to this silly pastor’s foolish plans.  Secondly, I would simply say that when immature people do immature things for attention, we should not be surprised and we should not give it any attention.

  1. All three are certainly immature. Burning effigies is slightly more disturbing and something to at least take note of. Its one thing to threaten to burn copies of someone’s sacred text but quite another to threaten to burn a person. But it probably is just attention seeking–in which case it is not worthy of our attention.

  2. I suppose burning effigies is typically just guys blowing off some steam, but I guess its kinda like death threats–most people don’t follow through, but then there is always that one guy that does in which case people will undoubtedly say, “hey you should have paid attention to that!”

Additionally, there is the whole issue of 50 wackos planning to burn Qur’ans versus thousands of people screaming and setting things on fire outside the U.S. Embassy–not quite tit for tat. On of these things is more concerning than the other.
